Skate plaza: a positive use of public space to provide legal skateboarding terrain in an urban setting.

Implementations are constantly evolving the concept of a skate plaza. Some of the earliest skate plazas are DIY affairs built by skateboarders themselves beneath bridges. FDR in Philadelphia, Burnside in Portland, and Washington Street in San Diego, are examples of blighted pieces of public property repurposed into heavily-used recreational facilities.
One of the newest skate plazas is located in Vancouver, Canada. It's captured a lot of attention due to its innovative use of street skating elements such as stairs, handrails, and transitioned banks. The Vancouver example demonstrates how a skateboarding community is best served with a mixture of transition and street skating elements.

The Dallas suburb of Allen, Tx. is nearing completion of its skate plaza. The 38,000 sq. foot facility promises to be the largest public skatepark in Texas when opened and will be the first public skate plaza in the Dallas area. The city of Allen, however, is planning to charge $12.00 per day for access, which blurrs the distinction of a private vs. public facility.
Carter Dennis, of Skaters for Public Skateparks and the Sk8 San Antonio organizations, has posted photos online of the Allen skate plaza still under construction.

After a long time in the coming, the Kettering Skate Plaza is nearing completion. Here is a photo of the mamoth project. Although the construction costs seem to have exceeded the original projections, the DC shoe company is helping the City of Kettering, OH see this project through.
